Coaching project leaders to develop emotional maturity across their teams, their workspace and their sponsorship will focus on:
Self-awareness: Helping project leaders identify and understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
Self-regulation: Helping project leaders to manage their emotions in a healthy and productive way.
Motivation: Helping project leaders to stay motivated and engaged, even in challenging situations.
Empathy: Helping project leaders to develop empathy for others, and to understand and respond to their needs.
Social skills: Helping project leaders to develop effective communication and relationship-building skills.
A simple coaching framework to help project leaders grow emotional maturity and improve project performance includes:
Step 1: Assessment:
Jointly the coach and the project leader work together to assess the level of emotional maturity in their current projects. This can be done in unison with the standard project performance review and supervision using a variety of methods, including assessments, discussions, and feedback.
Step 2: Goal setting:
Once the current level of emotional maturity has been assessed and priority gaps identified, jointly the coach and the project leader work to set specific goals for the integrated EQ development and project performance improvement. These goals are aligned with the project delivery objectives, key performance challenges and EQ gaps across the the project team, the project workspace and project sponsorship.
Step 3: Development plan:
The coach and the project leader jointly review and develop integrated actions for achieving the integrated EQ development and project performance targets. This plan may include a variety of activities, such as improvement challenges, practice exercises, group workshops, and learning tasks.
Step 4: Implementation:
The project leader implements the improvement plan and works towards achieving the targeted changes. The coach provides support and guidance throughout the improvement process.
Step 5: Evaluation:
The coach and the project leader meet regularly to evaluate the progress, make necessary adjustments to the improvement plan and identify new areas for development and focus.
This is just a simple coaching outline example. The specific activities and interventions that are required will vary depending on the individual needs of the project and the project leadership.
Some examples of applied EQ coaching activities that can help project leaders grow the emotional maturity in their project teams, their project workspace and their project sponsorship include:
Self-awareness exercises: These exercises can help leaders and key stakeholders to identify and understand their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. This can include journaling, reflection, and EQ self-assessments.
Self-regulation strategies: These strategies can help project teams to manage their emotions in a healthy and productive way. Examples can include stress management tools & techniques, and coping mechanisms.
Motivational coaching: This type of coaching can help key project leaders to stay motivated and engaged, even in challenging situations. Examples of motivational coaching techniques include goal setting, positive reinforcement, and accountability reviews.
Empathy building: This type of development can help teams to develop empathy for each other and better understand and respond to their stakeholder needs. Examples can include simple role-playing, case study review, and simulations.
Social skills building: This type of development can help project managers and their teams to improve effective communication and relationship-building skills. Examples can include conflict resolution exercises, communication skills exercises, and team building.
