There are a few key reasons why Emotional Intelligence may be missing from the Project Management Office (PMO).
PMO professionals are often focused on process, methodology, stage gates, technical credentials and knowledge. PMO teams may have a strong understanding of project management methodologies and tools, but they may lack the interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence necessary to effectively lead and manage people or global projects.
The PMO may be seen as a bureaucratic or administrative function. This can lead to a perception that PMO professionals are not as creative or innovative as other members of the organisation impacting empathy and teamwork.
The PMO may not have a strong relationship with other departments or teams. This can make it difficult for PMO professionals to build trust and rapport with key stakeholders, which is essential for effective project management.
To address these challenges, PMO professionals can focus on developing their EQ skills. This includes learning how to:
Build relationships with key stakeholders. This involves identifying them, understanding their needs and concerns, and building trust and rapport.
Communicate effectively with all stakeholders. This means being able to communicate effectively and efficiently by tailoring your communication style to the target audience, and being able to listen actively and respond thoughtfully.
Resolve conflict effectively. This involves being able to identify the root cause of the conflict, and working with all parties involved to find a mutually agreeable solution.
Motivate and inspire others. This involves being enthusiastic and able to create a positive and supportive work environment, and helping others to achieve their goals.
By focusing on EQ skill development, PMO professionals can help themselves and their teams become more effective leaders and managers. They can also help to improve the overall success of projects within their organisation.
Here a few specific tips for improving EQ in the PMO:
Create a culture of empathy and understanding. This means encouraging PMO professionals and the PM Teams to be aware of their own emotions, and to be respectful of the emotions of others.
Provide opportunities for professional development. This could include training on topics such as conflict resolution, communication (especially effective email writing), and leadership.
Create a supportive work environment. This means providing PMO professionals with the resources (especially the workspace ecosystem) and support they need to be successful.
By following these tips, you can help to create a PMO that is more effective and supportive. Need help with the development of EQ capabilities to improve your PMO performance? Engage Applied EQ Services for bespoke online coaching, mentoring and consultancy services.
